Experiments

The project's list of open questions -- what is being tried, what it is about, and what was decided.

The project's list of experiments -- one row per question. This is the only list of them, and where finding happens.

It is the same list as your projects, characters, locations and props: sort it by Recent, Starred or A->Z, switch between a list and a grid of cards, and use a row's menu to rename or delete it. In the grid, each card shows the last picture generated inside that experiment. Each row shows the experiment's title, what it is about (its subjects, in brackets after the title), and its status -- Open, Decided, or Pick to make. The verdict and the trial media are on the experiment's own page.

Pick to make means the experiment is carrying a question your project still owes an answer to: it was started from a model choice you deferred. Its title and question are filled in for you. Open it and every build of that model is listed above the gallery, with what it is, where it runs and how many results it has made so far. Select the picture to try it on, press Try on a build (or Try all), compare the results, then press the button that reads Make the default for the one you want. Starring the result you preferred and deciding makes the pick too. See Choosing models.

Actions

New experiment asks for three things: a title, the question it answers, and optionally the one thing it is about. The question matters -- it is what makes the verdict worth writing later.

Clicking a title opens the experiment's Properties page; a newly created experiment opens on its Media page, where its first inputs are.

The Experiment group

Experiments are a bench you use at the start of a project, and whenever you need to try a technology, so they have a group of their own at the bottom of the sidebar, after Shot. It holds three rows:

  • All experiments -- this list.
  • Properties -- the experiment's title and question (click the pen icon to edit either), its status, the operation it was started about, what it is about, and -- once it is decided -- its conclusion, which you can also edit.
  • Media -- the experiment's gallery, with Keep in and Decide beneath the compare strip and, while a pick is pending, the choose-a-default card.

On either page the header names the experiment, so you always know which one you are in, and the group is open with the current page highlighted. Creating an experiment still happens in a dialog; changing one afterwards is done on its Properties page.

Delete asks once, then removes the experiment and its trial media. Anything you kept in a character, location, prop, scene or shot gallery stays exactly where it is and keeps working. Decided experiments are meant to be deleted -- that is the end of the question's life, not a loss.

Starting from the thing you are working on

You rarely start here. Most experiments begin on an entity's Media page: select the picture you want to try things on and pick New experiment from selection from the gallery's menu (or open the Links dropdown and press + New experiment). The experiment arrives already about that entity, with the picture you had selected as its first input.

Every character, location, prop, scene and shot Media page carries one Links dropdown in its gallery controls. It opens a single dialog of everything that entity is connected to, grouped:

  • All Experiments about -- one row per experiment, with its status; clicking one opens it. + New experiment here starts a new one about this entity.
  • Related -- the relations the entity already holds: a shot's scene, cast, location and props; a scene's episode and its shots; a character's looks. Each row navigates, keeping the project and episode you are working in.

One dialog rather than a tab per kind of relation, so "what else is tied to this?" is one place to look.
